Well Travelled | The Scarlet

Well Located

Overlooking Mawgan Porth's beautiful bay, The Scarlet is a luxury eco-escape on the North coast of Cornwall. Newquay airport is just five minutes away but it should be noted that the hotel offers a green discount to any guests who travel via foot, bike, rail or coach. If you’re the adventurous type the areas surfing, kayaking, coasteering and horse riding should keep you busy before you sit back and unwind in one of the cliff top hot tubs.

Well Fed

The Scarlet Restaurant serves fresh, locally sourced food led by Head Chef Mike Francis. Dishes are modern but maintain the gusto of Cornwall with crab, Cornish seaweed and brown shrimp aplenty. Working with innovative, organic and sustainable growers, farmers and fishermen to source the best produce the county has to offer – the menus change regularly and with the seasons. Although we are big fans of fresh fish at WELL CURATED we were also pleased to see a number of vegetarian and vegan-friendly options, from salt baked vegetables to Ayurvedic inspired curried aubergine.

Well Being

Other than its breath-taking location, The Scarlet’s unique selling point is the Ayurvedic inspired spa. Instead of booking in for a standard spa day, guests can take part in an individually tailored journey consisting of…

  • A consultation to discover your dosha type and create the perfect combination of treatments for you

  • A hammam or rhassoul bathing ritual to prepare your body by cleansing skin & loosening muscles

  • Relaxation & meditation to free your mind

  • A theraputic treatment in the luxury tented treatment rooms with a blend of yoga, breath work & massage

  • Deep relaxation in cocoon-like pods where you can drift away and absorb the calmness you have created

  • A consultation with the in house Ayurvedic doctor to discuss nutrition, medication & sleep patterns

The Scarlet Spa experience doesn’t stop there, the outdoor pool is natural and reed filtered and feels like a secret wild swimming spot, perfect for a cold plunge after the steam room or hot tub. The indoor pool has floor to ceiling windows connecting you to the outdoors and the complimentary programme of classes includes everything from tai chi to talks on skincare for your dosha type. This is truly one of the best spa offerings WELL CURATED have come across in the UK.

Well Sustained

The Scarlet aim is to create memorable holidays, experiences and escapes which don’t cost the Earth. Their pioneering concept means they have created a hotel which is sustainable in 111 different ways, to find out more click here. In 2011, The Scarlet and Bedruthan, their sister hotel, set up a Community Fund that funds new or existing projects in the parish that contribute to improving the local natural environment or provide a social benefit to people living in the area. The fund enables guests to give back to charities to support different environmental projects in Cornwall with a donation of £5 per booking. These charities include Surfers Against Sewage – supporting the cleanliness of our seas and beaches and CoaST: One Planet Tourism Network – focused on researching, promoting, and enabling sustainable tourism in Cornwall.
